Our family is from Phayao City and we have a house about 3 kms from the city center. All of phayao province has remained a sleepy little backwater, while things are changing they ar changing slowly here. Phayao is much like Chiang Rai was many years ago. If it's night life you crave then stick with Chiang Mai. If wonderful people, incredible real northern cuisine and great scenery turn you on then this is a great spot for you.

Phayao has an overall area of 6,355 square kilometers and borders Chiang Rai on the north, on the East is the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Laos) and Nan Province, to the South is Phrae and Lampang with Chiang mai province to the West. Phayao city is situated along Kwan (Lake) Phayao a huge lake and fish habitat.

Phayao has a good Government Hospital and a modern Private one. Major cases are always transfered to Chiang Mai or sometimes Chiang Rai

Phayao is located 690 kilometers from Bangkok, 94 kms from Chiang Rai and 140 kms from Chiang Mai.

History and General Interest

Phayao is an old province of Thailand, established in 1095 by King of Chiang Saen. In the reign of King Ngum Muang, 1267 the existence of the people was very prosperous. In 1897 King Rama V combined Phayao with Chiang Rai Province, and in 1977 Phayao was divided from Chiang Rai again and proclaimed to be one of the provinces of Thailand.
